GERMAN, EDWARD  BIOGRAPHY

(1862 - 1936)

Edward German, knighted in 1928 for his services to music, was the successor of Sir Arthur Sullivan in the field of English operetta. A composer of some versatility, he wrote little after 1910, feeling out of sympathy with the new age in music, which by then had dawned.

Operettas

The patriotic comic opera Merrie England was staged at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1902. The stirring Yeomen of England vies in popularity with an aria for Queen Elisabeth I of England, O peaceful England, while I my watch am keeping.
