CROUCH, FREDERICK NICOLLS

(1808 - 1896)

Born into a family of musical ancestry, Frederick Nicholls Crouch, a cellist like his father, played in a number of theatre orchestras, before establishing a career as a singer and lecturer on the songs and legends of Ireland. He moved to New York in 1849, where he continued a varied career. He had at least eighteen children from four bigamous marriages and in his later years worked as a varnisher in a Baltimore factory. He wrote a large number of songs, of which Kathleen Mavourneen is the best known, the one through which his name is remembered.
