WILBYE, JOHN BIOGRAPHY(1574 - 1638)
The English madrigalist Wilbye spent the greater part of his life in the service of the Kytson family at Hengrave Hall near Bury St. Edmunds.
Madrigals
Wilbye followed the example of Thomas Morley as a composer of madrigals, publishing collections of his work in 1598 and 1609 and contributing one madrigal to the 1601 collection in honour of Queen Elizabeth, The Triumphs of Oriana, the six-voice The Lady Oriana. Well known madrigals by Wilbye include Sweet hony sucking bees, Weep O mine eyes and Happy, O happy he.
