LESCHETIZKY, THEODOR  BIOGRAPHY

(1830 - 1915)

Leschetizky is remembered primarily as a legendary piano teacher. His career as a pianist, teacher and conductor took him to St. Petersburg, where he taught at the Conservatory founded by his friend Anton Rubinstein, later moving to Vienna to teach privately, his pupils including many of the leading pianists of the new generation, including Schnabel, Mark Hambourg and Benno Moiseivich. His compositions include a quantity of piano music, much of it calling for a high degree of virtuosity in performance.
