TABACHNIK, MICHEL

The Swiss conductor Michel Tabachnik trained as a pianist, composer and conductor in his native city Geneva. Back in 1966 Tabachnik became an assistant to Igor Markevitch in Madrid and later, for four years, he was assistant to Pierre Boulez at the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. After a concert in Paris in 1971 Herbert von Karajan engaged Tabachnik to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic. Since then he has conducted several of the world’s most esteemed orchestras including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and l’Orchestre de Paris. As an opera conductor Tabachnik has conducted in a number of the world’s leading opera houses, including those in Paris, Geneva, Rome, Montreal, Zurich and Copenhagen. Michel Tabachnik is a highly respected teacher and was professor of conducting at the University of Toronto in 1982-88 and at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen in 1993-2001. Michel Tabachnik has recorded for among other labels Erato and Lyrinx, with which he has been associated since 1991.
