Capriccio

Vocal Recital – SCHUMANN, R. / WOLF, H.
Schwanewilms, Lange
Capriccio C5166

Anne Schwanewilms ranks among the greatest Strauss and Wagner interpreters today, but her secret love still belongs to the Lied. ‘Up to now I insist on my song recitals, that means pursuing the path of my soul, then I am the orchestra, the singers, the driving force with all together. The pianist is my most important partner, and it is quite simple communication to produce pure music, in the simplest form.’ For her new album, the soprano quite deliberately chose songs by Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf. ‘It is the conception of a “somnambulist’s gait”, enlivened by memories, dreams and steps back into the past – for the tranquillity that can emerge with Schumann and Wolf is for me incredibly intensive and fascinating.’

Delos

WEIGL, J.: Song and Arias
George, Mauro
Delos DE3453

Tenor Donald George and pianist Lucy Mauro have lately made it their musical mission in life to merge their talents in support of music by neglected, yet deserving composers. Here, working in cooperation with a concert series sponsored by the Esterházy Estate in Eisenstadt (Josef Weigl’s birthplace), they offer an enchanting mix of Weigl’s Lieder and arias – with the bonus offering of several interpolated arias from other well-known composers of his day. Mr. George’s burnished tenor voice is in top form, and Ms. Mauro provides lively, sensitive and historically informed support from a sweet-sounding fortepiano.

duoW
Dorian Sono Luminus DSL-92171

In an extraordinary example of Sono Luminus’ committment to unearthing neotoric and intriguing talent, we present the blockbuster team that is duoW in their debut album, Entendre. duoW presents five highly virtuosic works that challenge and redefine the limits and capabilities of the violin and cello partnership, and transport the listener through time, allowing them a glimpse into each composer’s world.

MDR Klassik

ARMAN, H.: Metamorphosen
Arman
MDR Klassik MDR1306

Metamorphoses: the transformation of gods and men, told in tales of longing and delusion, love and union, resistance and revenge; told in the stories of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus, two beings who became one; of Arachne, the spider-woman; of the gods who turned themselves into beasts; of Pan and the nymph Syrinx, who disappeared before his eyes; of Pygmalion, the sculptor; and in the wonderful tale of Narcissus and Echo: image and mirror image, sound and resonance.

Oehms Classics

MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 7
Cologne Gurzenich Orchestra, Stenz
Oehms Classics OC652

‘Upon the first oar stroke, the theme of the introduction to the first movement occurred to me.’ This statement was made by Gustav Mahler when he was finally able to begin the composition of the Seventh Symphony after a long creative block (following the completion of the Sixth). The entire work was then completed in only four weeks at Lake Wörth in Carinthia. OehmsClassics is also speedily continuing the completion of the two Gürzenich cycles (Mahler and Tchaikovsky), presenting here a live recording from Cologne made in June 2012. In SACD quality, as always.

Solo Musica

DOHNANYI, E.: Piano Quintet No. 1 / DVORAK, A.: Piano Quartet No. 2 / SUK, J.: Elegie
Ensemble Raro
Solo Musica SM187

Ensemble Raro joined forces with the violinist Andrej Bielow to record three jewels of the Romantic chamber repertoire – Antonin Dvorak’s Piano Quartet in E flat major, Erno Dohnanyi’s First Piano Quintet and Joseph Suk’s Elegie. The result leaves a singular impression on the listener. An unaffected sincerity of the five performers takes its roots from the profound respect they had developed for each other’s musical identity. Complete identification with the musical material coupled with truly Romantic imagination makes for a very fine listening experience.

Timpani

BIZET, G.: Docteur Miracle (Le) [Operetta]
Souquet, Druet, Billy, Pruvot, Orchestre Lyrique de Region Avignon Provence, S. Jean
Timpani 1C1204

What a lovely little comic opera Bizet has given us! And his first! Written for a competition organised by Offenbach – and he won it. In one act, involving an old man and his wife (who intends burying him as she has buried her four previous husbands), a girl in love with an officer who appears successively as a valet, a cook, a quack doctor... All ends well, though only after a fake poisoning attempt with an omelette. The turning point and heart of this comedy is in fact the ‘omelette quartet’, its grandiloquence aping the grand opera of the day. Meyerbeer in tights!

Orchestral Music – STRAUSS, R. / WAGNER, R. / BRAHMS, J. (Salzburg Festival, 2012)
Stemme, Vienna Philharmonic, Jansons
EuroArts 2072624 [Blu-ray Video] / 2072628 [DVD]

This programme dedicated to the second half of the 19th century was one of the highlights of the Salzburg Festival 2012. An absolute novelty to be released on DVD and Blu-ray is the performance of Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder sung by the outstanding Swedish soprano Nina Stemme. A brilliant reading of Richard Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 complete this extraordinary concert performance. Mariss Jansons, chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and winner of the Cannes Classical Award, and soprano Nina Stemme offer a ‘superlative concert experience’ (Kurier).

Opus Arte

ROSSINI, G.: Ciro in Babilonia
Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro, 2012
Opus Arte OABD7123D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1108D [DVD]

The Biblical story of Belshazzar’s hubristic arrogance set against the valour of the young warrrior-leader Cyrus provided the 20-year-old Rossini with a dramatic story with West-Eastern resonances which still speak to us today. For the title role of Cyrus, Rossini wrote what would be his longest-ever contralto role, to which the great Rossini singer Ewa Podles is both naturally attracted and ideally suited. She is partnered by two young American stars of Rossini singing, Jessica Pratt and Michael Spyres, and a conductor-scholar, Will Crutchfield, of immense experience and sympathy.
