Accentus Music

BRUCKNER, A.: Symphony No. 1
Abbado
Accentus Music ACC-30274

“Abbado uncovered the radical nature of the work with its fascinating accumulations of intensity and abrupt interruptions … Long and enthusiastic standing ovations at the end for the conductor and orchestra.” (Die Welt) – The audience experienced Bruckner’s groundbreaking Symphony No. 1 in Lucerne’s new concert hall in a spectacular performance. This uncompromising interpretation of the First reveals the originality of the composer’s musical language.

Cantaloupe Music

BURHANS, C.: Magnificat / Amidst Neptune / Iceman Stole the Sun / Super Flumina Babylonis (Evensong)
Burhans
Cantaloupe Music CA-21094

Ask composer, singer, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Burhans about his relationship to the Christian tenets of faith, and he’ll give you a thoughtful but conflicted answer. “Despite the fact that I’ve sung in church choirs for almost twenty years, I’m agnostic,” he says. “So a lot of my music deals with my struggles with religion.” Evensong is Burhans’ defining statement of his complex connection to the church – an “emo-classical” epic where sacred meets secular in a pure, dynamic expression of musical influences that range from classical to ambient to post-rock.

Capriccio

Chamber Music - WANG, Ming / SEIDELMANN, A. / NUSSBICHLER, L. / OFENBAUER, C. / STANKOVSKI, A. (Tribüne) (Exxj)
Ensemble XX. Jahrhundert, Burwik
Capriccio C5171

In the course of its more than forty years in existence, the ensemble xx. jahrhundert has constantly and successfully championed aesthetically diverse contemporary Austrian music: with commissions for compositions, world premieres in Austria and abroad, with radio productions and with the treatment of traditional cultural principles – in recent years particularly intensively in co-operation with the Austrian Composers’ Society (ÖKB). In the course of five years, up to now 36 works by 35 composers have been performed in the jointly held concerts – not just a few of them were world premieres. The concentrated acquisition of new listening experiences and the exchange of impressions and opinions in personal contacts between the audience and the composers and performers take place in a communicative and casual environment.

CD Accord

CHOPIN, F.: Piano Music
Popowa-Zydron
CD Accord CDAccordACD189

In an interview of 2005, conducted by the recently departed first lady of Polish journalism, Teresa Torańska, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń modestly suggested that “the world can very well do without my playing.” Having listened to her wise and mature interpretations of Chopin’s most demanding masterpieces – interpretations that until recently could only be admired by the artist’s closest circle of friends – I will not hesitate to claim that Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń was wrong in keeping them private – and that for much too long!

Dacapo

SCHIERBECK, P.: Fete galante [Opera]
Schonwandt
Dacapo 6.220637-38

Dalliance, deceit and dastardly blackmail are all in the air at the rococo palace of Versailles, where the Danish composer Poul Schierbeck’s (1888-1949) only opera Fête galante from 1930 unfolds its coulorful plot. Schierbeck’s opera maintains an exquisite musical balance between the lyrical and the comic, and this recording brings new life to Schierbeck’s tuneful music with a strong Nordic singers’ cast in front of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt.

Delos

FOOTE, A.: Piano Music (Complete)
Johnson
Delos DE3442

With this remarkable three-CD collection of Arthur Foote’s complete piano music (much of it recorded here for the first time), Kirsten Johnson has filled a long-standing gap in the global discography of this very worthwhile American composer’s music. Foote was a prominent member of the so-called “Boston Six,” a highly influential group that included fellow composers Beach, George Chadwick, Edward MacDowell, John Knowles Paine and Horatio Parker. Much of their music has yet to gain the exposure it deserves, as its strong European roots has led the musical establishment to unfairly dismiss it as lacking originality as well as true American sound and spirit.

Divox

BEETHOVEN, L. van: Piano Quartets, WoO 36, Nos. 1-3 / Piano Trio, WoO 38 / Allegretto, WoO 39
Milander Quartet
Divox CDX-20704

Coinciding with the 2013 Alfred-Brendel-Encouragement-Award at the Ruhr Piano Festival being awarded to Milana Chernyavska, Divox releases a new recording by the pianist on which she performs early works by Ludwig van Beethoven together with her ensemble, the Milander Quartet. These rarely performed – and even more rarely recorded – works show the pianist and ensemble as sensitive interpreters of these early works, some of which were only published after Beethoven’s death.

Oehms Classics

ZARLINO, G.: Modulationes per Philippum Iusbertum
Singer Pur
Oehms Classics OC873

Goseffo Zarlino composed motets and secular works. He achieved significance as the leading music theoretician of the 16th century, having brought together and updated a rich body of ancient literature about music in view of the compositional principles of his own time. His extensive principal work “Istitutioni harmoniche” (1558) is based on the compositional technique of his teacher Adrian Willaert, out of which he developed a systematic, harmony-based key, counterpoint and fugue theory. After having sung madrigals and motets of Adrian Willaert, it was natural that Singer Pur should dedicate themselves to the music of Zarlino as well.

Ondine

LINDBERG, M.: Violin Concerto / Jubilees / Souvenir
Kuusisto, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Lindberg
Ondine ODE1175-2

Ondine continues its collaboration with Magnus Lindberg by presenting the world première recordings of his Violin Concerto, and the chamber orchestra works Jubilees and Souvenir. Magnus Lindberg’s music is always instrumentally idiomatic and powerful. The soloist part in the Violin Concerto is demanding, yet gratifying, and rich. On this recording, internationally renowned violinist Pekka Kuusisto appears as soloist and director of the Tapiola Sinfonietta, an orchestra with which he works together on a frequent basis.

Yarlung Records YAR96821

‘In the age of compressed digital downloads, it is refreshing to hear real sound and real music again, reminiscent of RCA Living Stereo in its golden age, or Mercury Records at its height. Yarlung’s sound is liquid and transparent, just as if you were sitting in the concert halls with superb acoustics, where these recordings are made. Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Ambassador Hall in Pasadena, and Zipper Hall at The Colburn School…’ – Mori Shima, Stereo Sound Japan

Arthaus Musik

MONTEVERDI, C.: Incoronazione di Poppea (L')
Schwetzingen Festival, 1993
Arthaus Musik 102304 [DVD]

With this version of L’ incoronazione di Poppea the famous Baroque expert René Jacobs and stage director Michael Hampe produced one of the most recognized versions of Monteverdi’s last opera. Supported by the inventive original-sound ensemble Concerto Köln and the famous singers Patricia Schuman, Richard Croft, Kathleen Kuhlmann and Harry Peeters this interpretation shows the very modern aspects of a piece that was first performed in 1642.

EuroArts

RIHM, W.: Dionysos
Salzburg Festival, 2010
EuroArts 2072604 [Blu-ray Video] / 2072608 [DVD]

Dionysos stood out as one of the brilliant highlights of the 2010 Salzburg Festival. Wolfgang Rihm compiled the libretto for this remarkable opera fantasy, in which every word comes from Nietzsche’s Dionysos Dithyrambs. The story follows the figure of N. (Johannes Martin Kränzle), a blend and interaction of Dionysos, Marsyas and Nietzsche, an eternal wanderer in search of love, fulfilment and truth. Ingo Metzmacher (musical direction) and Pierre Audi (artistic director) have shaped a breathtaking work of art, an impressive operatic fantasy made all the more impressive by Jonathan Meese’s stage sets. Bettina Ehrhardt leads us along the path from score to premiere in the vivid images and copious interviews of her documentary film Ich bin dein Labyrinth.

Opus Arte

WAGNER, R.: Rienzi
Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse, 2012
Opus Arte OABD7125D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1110D [DVD]

Championing love and personal heroism in the face of ecclesiastical oppression and political chicanery, Wagner’s third opera explores characteristic themes with terrific energy which culminates in the eponymous Roman tribune’s famous prayer to the gods of his fatherland, followed by a riot which prefigures the young composer’s own abortive career as a firebrand and revolutionary. Within the timeless and elegant minimalism of Jorge Lavelli’s production, Torsten Kerl brings ringing authority to the title role, supported by the experienced Wagnerian Pinchas Steinberg.
