UNITED STATES NAVY BAND: Anchors Aweigh (The Best of the United States Navy Band)
United States Navy Band Sea Chanters Chorus, United States Navy Band, Gambone, Pastin, Phillips, Thompson
Altissimo 75442203052

Charles A. Zimmerman (1862-1916) was a bandleader and lieutenant at the U.S. Naval Academy when he wrote the tune for this 1906 song. He composed it at the request of Midshipman Alfred H. Miles, who provided the lyrics. The two collaborated on the effort intending to produce a new fighting song for the Naval Academy's football team. But the song grew immensely popular and eventually, with different lyrics, it became the official song of the United States Navy. Midshipman Ryan Lovell added a third verse to the song, and then George D. Lottman revised the lyrics altogether, creating the well-known version. The "Anchors Aweigh" theme is familiar throughout the United States and much of the world.

BR-Klassik

HAYDN, J.: Schöpfung (Die)
Tilling, Padmore, Müller-Brachmann, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Haitink
BR-Klassik 900125

Following Mahler's Ninth and Bruckner's Fifth, this live recording of Joseph Haydn's "The Creation" is already the third CD recording to feature the masterly Bernard Haitink at the helm of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Haitink has been a guest conductor of the orchestra for over 50 years now. Haydn's oratorio "The Creation", first performed in 1798, instantly became an established part of the repertoire and the greatest success the composer had ever experienced. Today, it still ranks as an important test for any ensemble of soloists, choir and orchestra. The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and its Choir joined forces for this recording, together with a team of renowned soloists. The solo parts of the three archangels are sung by renowned soprano Camilla Tilling, Mark Padmore, who can also be heard in the BR-Klassik recording of Britten's "War Requiem", and bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann who, as a representative of the younger generation, is enjoying a remarkable operatic, lieder and concert career.

Capriccio

VERDI, G.: Songs
Parisi, Spencer, Vargas
Capriccio C5170

For Giuseppe Verdi “the song had about the same significance that the sketch has for the painter”. It gave him the opportunity “to sketch emotions and characters in a smaller, more improvised form, genre pictures of passions and destinies he otherwise placed in the wide space of the stage”. Hence, his songs are, as it were, the forerunners of his theater music. Performed by Ramón Vargas – one of the leading tenors of our time and one of the most sought-after worldwide.

Oehms Classics

BRUCKNER, A.: Study Symphony
Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Young
Oehms Classics OC686

This “youthful” study symphony of Anton Bruckner’s (he was nearly 40 at the time of completion) represents his earliest symphonic output and is not wholly representative of the future path of his subsequent symphonies. This Oehms Classics recording, undertaken by conductor Simone Young and her Hamburg Philharmonic, is yet one more addition to her growing and respected discography, which includes six Bruckner symphonies in their original versions.

Tactus

BERARDI, A.: Sinfonie, Op. 7
Longo, Clemente
Tactus TC630201

Angelo Berardi (1636-94) maintained in his day that modern music had reached “greater perfection compared to the past” and that the practice of music was more important than theory; he asserted, moreover, that a good composition should also elevate the soul to virtuous thoughts. In terms of his stylistic profile, Berardi shows great richness of inspiration, so much so that this, his only work assigned to the violin, seems to cover the entirety of the instrument’s abilities and expressive variety.

COUNTRY ROADS - The Heartbeat of America (Documentary, 2013)
Schroeder
Arthaus Musik 108118 [Blu-ray Video] / 102199 [DVD]

In her documentary, Country Roads, Marieke Schroeder embarks on a search for the authentic America – a country at a turning-point. It is a search for the substantial: the morale, the pioneering spirit that holds the nation and its population together in crisis. We meet the young generation of American singer-songwriters who consider themselves as successors of Country-rebels such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle. They despair of themselves and their homeland and at the same time are full of hope, full of faith. Country Music opens up our view of the soul of the American nation and lets us rediscover the land and the music.

SPUCK, C.: Poppea // Poppea (Gauthier Dance, 2013)

EuroArts 2059744 [3D Blu-ray Video] / 2059748 [DVD]

For this production, choreographer Christian Spuck was inspired by Claudio Monteverdi’s last opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea, the story of the marriage of the Emperor Nero and Poppea Sabina where, in the end, all succumb to the elemental force of a totally amoral idea of “love”, and the boundaries between reality and fiction become blurred. Poppea // Poppea has been awarded with the German Theatre Prize “Der Faust”.

ROSSINI, G.: Italiana in Algeri (L') (Rossini Opera Festival, 2013)
Goryachova, Esposito, Shi, Cassi, Orchestra & Chorus of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Encinar
Opus Arte OABD7148D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1141D [DVD]

The Pesaro Festival’s new offering in 2013 was an off-the-wall production of Rossini’s popular comedy, ‘The Italian Girl in Algiers’, presented as a Swinging Sixties, James Bond adventure, set in the desert oil fields of the North Africa. Davide Livermore’s gag-a-minute, helter-skelter romp followed an alarmingly life-like air-crash, which delivered the ‘Italian girl’ from Rome into the clutches of the local oil baron, Mustafa. All three lead singers (Alex Esposito as Mustafa, the high tenor Yijie Shi as the young lover Lindoro, and Anna Goryachova as the agile-voiced mezzo-soprano of the title role) were met with the audience’s roaring approval of the evening’s entertainment.
