Cantaloupe Music

TIME LOOPS
Michael Harrison • Maya Beiser
Cantaloupe CA-21086

Michael Harrison, composer and pianist, has been called “an American Maverick” by Philip Glass. With a uniquely personal style that transcends the ages, his music is both forward-looking and deeply rooted in different forms of traditional music. Time Loops, a collaboration with cello innovator Maya Beiser, is the second CD of Harrison’s works for Cantaloupe, and includes the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC), and Payton MacDonald (founding member of Alarm Will Sound) on tabla & percussion. The featured work Just Ancient Loops builds up to 20 layers of pre-recorded cellos, and was premiered by Beiser at the Bang on a Can Marathon in June 2012 along with an art film that was created for the project by multimedia artist Bill Morrison.

Capriccio

Ludwig THUILLE Selected Songs
Roman Trekel, baritone • Hartmut Höll, piano
Capriccio C5058

After a successful recording of Ludwig Thuille’s String Quartets, Capriccio continue their quest to cast light on a relatively forgotten composer. Thuille worked as a composer and teacher of the Münchner Schule, one of the leading musical centres of Europe at the turn of the 20th century. He was a friend of Richard Strauss and there is no doubt Strauss had a big influence on Thuille’s Lieder. On this new recording Baritone Roman Trekel and pianist Hartmut Höll perform a selection of Thuille’s works for voice and piano.

Carpe Diem

MUNDUS ET MUSICA: Polyphonic Music Around 1500
Qualia
Carpe Diem CD-16294

On their first CD, QUALIA presents a collection of polyphonic music from late medieval sources, especially from manuscripts around the year 1500. In a very short period of time around the turn of the 15th century, the European music culture changed from the ancient phytagoreic to meantone temperament and created some astounding, highly complex and intellectually as well as musically challenging works, taking inspiration from both old and modern musical influences. QUALIA lets the listener immerse into an almost alien musical world, into the deep roots and sources of being of European music history, which in today’s perception is almost lost completely.

CD Accord

POLISH PIANO QUINTETS
Lason Ensemble
CD Accord CDAccordACD178

“It is not the form that captures our attention but the twists and turns of the narration. However, it must be added that the ‘novel’ plays out in a highly abstract register. Therefore, it appears inappropriate to search for a concrete programme. After all, Liszt and Wagner did not write chamber music for a reason. The originality of this Polish chamber music masterpiece lies in the ‘amicably incompatible’ combination of classical and Late Romantic traditions.

“But the beauty of the Quintet lies mostly in the music. Against the backdrop of murmuring waves of the piano, the strings sail in a broad unison.” – Marcin Trzęsiok

ICA Classics

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’
SMETANA The Bartered Bride: Overture

Orquesta Nacional de España
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
Ataúlfo Argenta

ICA Classics ICAC5087

Before he was killed in a freak accident, aged only 44, Ataúlfo Argenta (1913–1958) was the foremost Spanish conductor of his generation and on the verge of a major international career. Argenta was not associated with Beethoven, yet this live ICA recording of the Eroica with the Orquesta Nacional shows him as an exciting interpreter. Argenta never recorded either this or Smetana’s Bartered Bride Overture (with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande) commercially in the studio. This is the first time these recordings have been published outside Spain, and they benefit from excellent remastering. The fill-ups consist of zarzuela orchestral preludes by Chapí and Giménez which have never been issued on CD before.

Newton Classics

MOZART Complete Flute Concertos
Frans Vester and Edward Witsenburg, flutes
Mozart-Ensemble Amsterdam • Frans Brüggen

Newton Classics NC8802152

These 1972 recordings were made by the cream of the Dutch early music movement, led by one of its alma parens, Frans Brüggen. They date from a time when early-music values of transparency, buoyancy and lightness of touch and tone were just beginning to filter through to performances of music from the Classical era, and they stand the test of time.

WAGNER Die Feen
Chor der Oper Frankfurt
Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester
Sebastian Weigle

Oehms Classics OC940

For his grand romantic opera Die Feen (The Fairies), Wagner reflected not only on Marschner, Weber, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Gluck – the influences of whom can be heard – but also on older predecessors than these. Contrary to the actual tradition of Romanticism, he did not search the Middle Ages for his subject, but went back to antiquity. The debutant wished to write an opera about none other than Orpheus, the most famous singer in Greek mythology and the son of Apollo, the leader of the muses. OehmsClassics now presents a live recording of the two concert performances at the Alte Oper Frankfurt given in May 2011.

Two Pianists

LISZT Etudes d’Exécution Transcendante
Aquiles Delle Vigne, piano
TwoPianists TP1039251

Aquiles delle Vigne has reached legendary status as one of the world’s most respected performers and teachers. The last pupil of Claudia Arrau, he has become an important historical link to both Arrau and Georges Cziffra. This disc, recorded for the TwoPianists label, features a dazzling display of technical and musical prowess in the Transcendental Etudes by Franz Liszt. The heroic musical vision is boldly provocative, reminding us of the younger, wilder Liszt. Some will be shocked, perhaps even disagree. But there is such a force, such strength to this performance that it makes us look at the Transcendental Etudes and imagine the impact they caused when heard for the first time.

Wiener Symphoniker

MAHLER Symphony No. 1
Wiener Symphoniker • Fabio Luisi
Wiener Symphoniker WS 001

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the city of Vienna’s renowned orchestra proudly presents the first production of its own, newly founded label. The first release is a paradigmatic example of the Wiener Symphoniker’s core repertoire. Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony in D major was written only four years before the orchestra was founded in 1900. So, not surprisingly, Gustav Mahler’s symphonies and their interpretational challenges were among the main interests of the orchestra and its many renowned conductors from the very beginning. Above that Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, being the first oeuvre of a Vienna revolutionary, is more than suitable for the start of a new Vienna orchestra label.

Yarlung Records

Takemitsu • Reich • Harrison • Tywoniuk • Ravel • Whitacre
Smoke & Mirrors Percussion Ensemble
Yarlung Records YAR87598

In Music for Pieces of Wood, Joe Beribak, sitting in the center of a semicircle, begins to strike the first pattern.  Joe will maintain this pattern, unflinchingly, for the entire duration of the piece. Katy, Jessica, Derek and Eddie contribute all of the sinuous and minimalist variation which they weave into filaments of sound and rhythm as if all five musicians were one person.  Smoke & Mirrors takes us on many journeys in this album.  These are refreshingly fully-developed works, each very different from the others, each with its own story.  As a whole, these pieces illustrate the breadth of contemporary classical music written for percussionists, as well as the flexibility and virtuosity of Smoke & Mirrors.  World class and sophisticated as this ensemble is, these musicians retain and communicate the sheer joy we experienced when banging pots and pans as two-, and three-year olds.  Do you remember your own pleasure making a racket as a kid? Smoke & Mirrors: Katalin La Favre, Jessica Cameron, Joe Beribak, Edward Hong and Derek Tywoniuk have never forgotten it.

Arthaus Musik

HANDEL Rinaldo
Deborah York (Almirena) • David Daniels (Rinaldo) • David Walker (Goffredo)
Bavarian State Opera • Harry Bicket
David Alden, stage director

Arthaus 100389 [DVD]

Ethereal music, a fairytale plot, beguiling sets and spectacular special effects – all these combined to make Rinaldo in every sense the Baroque multimedia event par excellence. In his modern staging, producer David Alden has resorted to all kinds of magic tricks. Unsurprisingly, opera-goers were quick to latch onto such a glittering and star-studded production. Indeed, there can be no doubt that the American David Daniels is the undisputed star of this Munich production, even alongside the other famous names on the cast list. The young conductor Harry Bicket directs the musical action from the harpsichord and “from the depths of the orchestra pit at the Bavarian State Opera conjures up mini-marvels of his own.” (Opera Now)

Under the direction of Massimo Palombella they perform works from some of the most beautiful and most popular composers of sacred music; from Gregorian chant to the Kyrie from Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina. MENDELSSOHN A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture
BRAHMS Symphony No. 1

Chicago Symphony Orchestra • Georg Solti
ICA Classics ICAD5089 [DVD]

Internationally renowned for his opera conducting as musical director of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, particularly his interpretation of Wagner’s Ring cycle, Hungarian-born Sir Georg Solti was also a celebrated symphonic conductor. Taking up the post as director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969, Solti remembered his early performances with the CSO as “an absolute joy” and would remain with them for 22 years, leading them in their debut European tour – of which the concert on this recording was the first fixture. Recorded in 1971, the film on this DVD is taken from the CSO’s appearance at the Edinburgh Festival in the same year: their first ever concert outside America.

ROSSINI Mosè in Egitto
Riccardo Zanellato (Moses) • Alex Esposito (Faraone)
Sonia Ganassi (Elcia) • Dmitry Korchak (Osiride)
Teatro Comunale di Bologna • Roberto Abbado
Graham Vick, stage director

Opus Arte OABD7112D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1093D [DVD]

This thought-provoking, modern-day interpretation of Rossini’s Mosè in Egitto sets the scene for superior music-making at the prestigious Rossini Festival in Pesaro. For conductor Roberto Abbado, the transposition of the action to the present day releases the energy of Rossini’s music. At his disposal is a cast of top-quality vocalists such as the “refined bel canto artist” (Bresciaoggi) Sonia Ganassi as Elcia, and the “outstanding” Dmitry Korchak as the Pharaoh’s son, two lovers fatefully drawn into the political turmoil and catastrophes of their time. Also among the protagonists are the “thoroughly brilliant” (DeutschlandRadio Kultur) baritone Alex Esposito as Faraone and, in his Rossini Festival debut, young, full-bodied bass Riccardo Zanellato as Moses. Conductor Roberto Abbado “inspired his musicians to deliver a spectacular performance” (Salzburger Nachrichten).
