BRUCKNER Symphonies Nos. 0-9
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra • Lorin Maazel, conductor
Br Klassiks 900711

The only complete Bruckner recording with Lorin Maazel. In a spectacular concert cycle from January to March 1999, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Lorin Maazel played the complete symphonies of Bruckner in Munich’s Philharmonie in the Gasteig. Maazel had at his disposal an ensemble with a long, impressive Bruckner tradition dating back to Eugen Jochum. The founding father and first Chief Conductor of the orchestra ranks as one of the most significant Bruckner conductors in the interpretive history of these works. The chronological compactness of the recording process, which guaranteed a unified artistic signature is the outstanding feature of this compete recording vis-à-vis many of the versions from the competition. An occupation with Bruckner’s complete works is an overwhelming experience for today’s listeners. With an enthralling effect the series develops from the stylistic variety of the early symphonies all the way to the ultimate clarity of the musical language in the unfinished Ninth Symphony.

The Magic Flute had been the sensation of the season in 1978. It received enormous and unanimous approval, endless applause on the night and brought on an unusual state of accord in the international press, where enthusiastic reviews soon gave the staging legendary status. Christian Boesch became one of the progenitors of this movement when he created a new version of Mozart’s popular opera, in which Papageno becomes the storyteller. He worked with director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle to develop a concept that presents Mozart’s wondrous mystery play – based on the Salzburg Festival production 1978 – in such a way that it encourages young audiences to relate to the genre and exposes them to the magic inherent in this particular work. This DVD captures the incomparable atmosphere of the first ever staging of The Magic Flute for Children.
