SPOHR Concertantes Nos 1 & 2, Duet in G major Op 3 No 3
Henning Kraggerud and Øyvind Bjorå, violins • Oslo Camerata and
Barratt Due Chamber Orchestra • Stephan Barratt-Due, conductor

8.570840

Louis Spohr’s life-long artistic commitment to elegance, sturdy workmanship and emotional reticence has burdened him with a reputation as a nostalgic conservative. Yet his melodic mastery, delicately poised Classical sensibility and advanced treatment of harmony, are evident in the highly enjoyable music on this disc. Glittering solo passages and congenial interplay between the soloists characterise both the Concertanti, which pay tribute to the Baroque concerto grosso and look forward to the music of Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Mahler, and the Duo, with its lively dialogues between equal partners.

‘This is a fine and satisfying recording of music which…has strong merits and certainly deserves repeated listening.’ – MusicWeb International

Gomalan Brass Quintet
8.572244

From West Side Story to The Simpsons, Barber’s Adagio (featured in the soundtracks of Platoon and The Elephant Man) and music by John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, this recording captures all the excitement of some of the most popular movie and television soundtracks, arranged for brass quintet. Two years after its foundation, the Gomalan Brass Quintet won first prize in the prestigious ‘Town of Passau’ International Contest in Germany and now enjoys an international career.

‘Gomalan Brass whoop it up with the casual mastery of virtuosos… More than that: each of the five players registers as an engaging presence even in the accompanimental lines. The recording is nothing short of superb—never a moment of distortion…The Bernstein is a triumph in every department… the rest of the tracks they are tirelessly enjoyable—the most impressive being the Indiana Jones medley.’ – MusicWeb International

José Gallardo
Winner of the of the 2005 German Music Competition, the 2005 Stuttgart International Cello Competition and the 2006 Adam International Cello Competition, New Zealand, as well as the recipient of a 2009 Borletti Buitoni Fellowship, Nicolas Alstaedt here presents the complete cello music of Gabriel Pierné and Vincent D’Indy. Pierné’s superbly crafted and elegant Cello Sonata was much influenced by the music of César Franck, while d’Indy shows a fondness for old French dance forms. Nadia Boulanger made a particularly lasting impression as a teacher, exerting strong influence notably over a generation of American composers. Her Three Pieces move from gentle meditation to wild dance.

‘Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and pianist José Gallardo are both committed advocates… well engineered and produced, typically lucid notes from Keith Anderson, lovely piano, technically superb cello playing’ – MusicWeb International

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Sancta Civitas, Dona nobis pacem
Christina Pier, soprano • Matthew Brook, baritone • Andrew Staples, tenor
The Bach Choir • Winchester Cathedral Choristers
Winchester College Quiristers • Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
David Hill, conductor

8.572424

Although Vaughan Williams described himself as ‘a cheerful agnostic’, he was not only steeped in the traditions of the Anglican Church, but sensitive to the mystical significance ‘of what lies beyond sense and knowledge’. Written in 1936, his cantata Dona nobis pacem sets powerful Biblical texts alongside those by Walt Whitman and John Bright and is both a warning that mankind was sliding disastrously towards another war and a plea for a world without strife. The oratorio Sancta Civitas, one of his most original choral works, strikingly deploys vocal and orchestral forces to depict the battle between good and evil from the Book of Revelation.

‘David Hill conducts excellent performances of two of Vaughan williams’s greatest choral works…the choral singing is superb.’ – The Daily Telegraph

‘The high-octane emotion Vaughan Williams injected is captured here with alacrity. Keen orchestral colours and pure diction from the chorus and choristers combine with Hill’s vivid reading of both scores to make this pairing a superb new addition to collectors’ shelves.’ – Choir & Organ

Concerto-Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra

Maxim Fedotov, conductor

8.570463

Dmitry Yablonsky

Maxim Fedotov
The Naxos series devoted to the orchestral music of Aram Khachaturian continues with his two works for cello and orchestra. The Cello Concerto, whose brooding emotional unease did not endear it to the authorities at a difficult time for Soviet musicians, is the most resourceful and forward-looking of his works from this period. The Concerto-Rhapsody is dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich and pursues a highly personal and intuitive approach to the relationship between soloist and orchestra. Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto and Concerto-Rhapsody for Violin are available on 8.570988, and the Piano Concerto and Concerto-Rhapsody for Piano on 8.550799.

‘Performed with an impeccable ear for Khachaturian’s folksy, serious-minded idiom by Dmitry Yablonsky.’ – Classic FM

‘These are recordings which any fan of Khachaturian would delight to have, and which should commend a richly enjoyable but long-forgotten concerto to a much wider audience. Rich, clear sound completes the package.’ – MusicWeb International

A Musical Journey ITALY
– Verona and Romeo and Juliet, Florence, Naples

Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra • Stephen Gunzenhauser, conductor
Vienna Chamber Orchestra • Philippe Entremont, conductor

2.110253

The Places
Our tour of Italy stars in Verona, with its reminiscences of Romeo and Juliet. Then to Florence, for some 300 years, from 1434, the seat of the powerful Medici family, whose artistic patronage has left an impressive cultural legacy. The tour ends in the south, with Naples, originally a Greek colony and later a Roman port, and then capital of a kingdom, ruled by Normans and later from Spain. Briefly a Habsburg possession, from 1734 it belonged to the Bourbons, before the unification of Italy in 1860.

The Music
Tchaikovsky stayed in Florence on two occasions in 1878, after the disaster of his marriage, hastily contracted, had led him to seek respite abroad. A visit to Rome in 1880 led to the composition of the Italian Capriccio and his opera The Queen of Spades was written in 1890 in Florence, recalled in the same year in his Souvenir de Florence. The other music heard here is the Fantasy Overture, Romeo and Juliet, written in 1869 and based on Shakespeare's play, set in Verona.

‘…a sumptuously-shot and expertly-edited collection of short sequences of some of the most beautiful and visually stimulating locations in those three cities…The subjects illustrating that splendour have been expertly chosen…Florence at night is an interesting idea—and well done…the earthiness of Naples is well and candidly conveyed.’ – MusicWeb International

This collection of popular excerpts from award-winning science fiction film scores brings together the spectacular compositions of some of the greatest American film composers of our time. John Williams’s eighty-odd scores have earned him more than 35 Academy Award nominations, five Oscars and six British Film Awards. The unparalleled box office success, Star Wars, has not only kept its place as the outstanding film of its genre but has inspired Williams’s near contemporaries to write ‘space music’. They include Laurence Rosenthal, Jerry Goldsmith and writer-producer Glen A. Larson, whose Battlestar Galactica and its TV sequels have proved enduringly popular.

‘This is the sort of stirring and mystical music that allows our imagination to take flight to a world of rocket ships, space travellers and exotic alien creatures.’ – Limelight

WEISS Lute Sonatas Vol 10
Lute Sonatas Nos 28 ‘Le fameux Corsaire’ & 40,
Tombeau sur la mort de M. Comte de Logy

Robert Barto, lute
8.572219

Robert Barto
Robert Barto’s recordings for Naxos of the lute music of Silvius Leopold Weiss have been acclaimed as ‘the most eloquent of them all, and this comprehensive series is a tribute to his skill and involvement’
(MusicWeb International). On this tenth volume he presents two sonatas, No. 28 ‘Le fameux Corsaire’ and No. 40, as well as the moving Tombeau sur la mort de M. Comte de Logy. While the identity of ‘the famous pirate’ commemorated in the former remains unknown, Count Johann Anton Logy von Losinthal was hailed in his lifetime as ‘the Prince of the Lute’.

‘Marvellously vivid performances, and beautifully recorded into the bargain. Enough said.’ – MusicWeb International

Mats Bergström, guitar
8.572365

Mats Bergström
Francisco Tárrega, the most influential Spanish virtuoso performer of the nineteenth century, was a charismatic romantic who, with a cigarette in his mouth, mesmerized his audiences for hours with his performances. On this disc, Swedish Royal Academy member Mats Bergström expresses the ‘light and shade’ of Tárrega’s music (sans cigarette!) on a modern instrument based on an 1888 model owned by the composer himself. The Preludes, composed between 1889 and 1909, are particularly well regarded pieces, while the other works include original compositions and imaginative transcriptions.

‘This is a fine program of Tarrega gems, performed lovingly. It’s a beautiful disk and I heartily recommend it.’ – Gapplegate Music Review

‘I don’t expect to hear them played with more elegance, warmth and charm—and the recording leaves nothing to be desired. I hope Naxos will ask him for a volume two before long. As a bonus we are also treated to ‘one of the most frequently heard tunes of our time’: measures 13–16 of Gran vals is the ring tone for Nokia mobile phones!’ – MusicWeb international

BALBASTRE Pieces de clavecin Book 1,
Livre contenant des pièces de different genre (excerpts)

Elizabeth Farr, harpsichord
8.572034-35

Elizabeth Farr
A celebrated keyboardist and composer under the ancien régime, Claude-Bénigne Balbastre survived the French Revolution only to die in poverty a decade later. His multifaceted musical legacy continued the strong tradition of French harpsichord music while embracing the innovations of Italian music, such as those of Scarlatti, and fashionable new styles which emerged for the salon. Completely charming and tuneful, his keyboard works are well served by the stunning Keith Hill instrument chosen for this recording. Other highly-acclaimed recordings featuring Elizabeth Farr are also available on Naxos.

‘I have previously commented on the clarity and boldness of the playing of the American organist and harpsichordist, Elizabeth Farr, and here she owes much to the use of a massive instrument made by Keith Hill containing one 16’, two 8’, one 4’ stop…the recording conveys its elemental power. A must for all harpsichord collections.’ – David’s Review Corner

WAGNER Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Götterdämmerung
(orchestral highlights) (Furtwängler, 1952 & 1954)

Kirsten Flagstad, soprano • Philharmonia Orchestra
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra • Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor

8.111348

Wilhelm Furtwängler
This disc of music by Wagner, very much a staple of Furtwängler’s repertoire, draws from recordings that would be amongst the conductor’s last. As always, the great German conductor ensures maximum expression while allowing the music to move forward in an organic way. The legendary Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad and Furtwängler were close as musicians over an extended period of time. Her beauty of tone, unforced strength, accurate intonation and ability to spin a long and precise vocal line are exemplified in this unforgettable performance of Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung.

‘By the 1950’s Wilhelm Furtwängler was regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the Austro-German classics, with a particular affinity to the music of Wagner…Excellent transfers. ‘– David’s Review Corner

Praised by Gramophone magazine for ‘his pinpoint articulation, his unerring sense of rhythmic drive and security, his weaving together of the many layers and voices and his sense of colour and phrasing’, Konstantin Scherbakov is only the second pianist to embark on recordings of the complete piano music of the great Polish-American pianist/composer Leopold Godowsky. On this disc he performs both original compositions and transcriptions or paraphrases of several pieces by Chopin, including an elaborate reworking of the Grande Valse Brillante in E flat major, Op. 18.

New revised edition after the autograph and contemporary manuscripts by Florian Bauer.First staged in Naples in 1816, seventy years before Verdi’s very different treatment of the same subject, Rossini’s Otello, based on Berio di Salsa’s libretto rather than on Shakespeare’s play, makes full use of no fewer than three lead tenors. In the 19th century the third act won particular praise for the Gondolier’s Song (Nessun maggior dolore) and for the Willow Song (Assisa a’ pie d’un salice), which features some of the composer’s most passionate writing for soprano (Desdemona). The opera concludes with the dramatic and ironic revelation of Jago’s villainy, the forgiveness offered to Otello and his final suicide. Verdi himself considered Rossini’s Otello a masterpiece.

ROUSSEL Symphony No 4, Rapsodie Flamande, Concert,
Petite Suite, Sinfonietta

Royal Scottish National Orchestra • Stéphane Denève, conductor
8.572135

Following a period of soul-searching during the mid-1920s, and as his music gained success outside France during the 1930s, Albert Roussel took the rhythmic dynamism, thematic integration and formal lucidity of his Third Symphony (8.570245) to new heights with his less well-known Fourth, notable for its intensely wrought slow movement. The pungent Sinfonietta, the Flemish Rhapsody, which draws on popular songs of the Belgian provinces, the picturesque Petite Suite and the exquisite Concerto for small orchestra showcase the composer’s colourful orchestration and fastidious craftsmanship. Roussel’s Symphony No. 2 (8.570529) gained The Gramophone Editor’s Choice.

‘An excellent disc, splendidly and idiomatically performed and a superb advertisement for composer, conductor and orchestra. Highly recommended.’ – Gramophone

Trois Elements d'un Songe

Jean-Baptiste Robin, organs of l’Église Saint-Louis-en-l'IÎe Paris and l’Église Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, Paris
8.570892

Jean-Baptiste Robin
As one might guess from their descriptive titles, Jean-Baptiste Robin’s works are evocative, poetic and colourful, abounding in strength, energy and passion. When you listen to them, the days of contemporary music devoid of expression and obsessed with structure seem long past. This is highly expressive music with something to say, full of ideas to fire our imagination. Robin, who here performs on the organs in the churches of Saint-Louis-en-l’Île and Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris, creates a world in flux, whose moving pictures and living images flow through a new fabric of sound.

‘As a concert organist Robin has built an impressive career founded on a string of competition successes. Here he displays a formidable technique while the engineers provide stunning sound. It is a disc I most strongly recommend to you.’ – David’s Review Corner

The Monks of Sherab Ling Monastery, Tibet
76044-2

This live recording was made during actual ceremonies and includes the natural ambient sounds of normal activity. Over many centuries, the prayer ceremonies on this CD have been performed by the Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns of the Karma Kagyu lineage, forming part of the foundation of their daily lives. These ceremonies originated in the great Buddhist monasteries of Tibet, and have been brought by the devoted practitioners to India, their land of refuge, where they continue this ancient tradition. In this recording there are many of the traditional instruments that the Tibetan monks and nuns learn during their studies at the monastery or nunnery.
