Welcome to the intimate, colourful and versatile world of music for lute and guitar, instruments with an ancestry tracing back thousands of years and a fascinating repertoire reflecting the physical and social development of the instrument over the past five centuries.

The music represented in this segment catalogue traces the instrument’s journey from the refinements of the early sixteenth century to the more cutting-edge characteristics it has inspired from 20th century composers. During that time the instruments have played numerous roles for different social activities – the obliging supplier of chords for the baroque basso continuo, the archetypal supporter of amorous serenades, the dancer’s accompanist for both genteel renaissance steps and impassioned flamenco, as well as the medium for traditional recitals.

Collectors wishing to assemble recordings by composer will find noted representatives of successive historical periods. Additionally, there are regional collections, solo recitals by internationally distinguished artists and examples of less familiar chamber ensemble works involving the guitar.

Jeremy Jouve, Guitar

Rodrigo’s music for solo guitar is not extensive but represents an important pillar of the repertoire, ranging from vignettes to sonatas over a six-decade period. The 1933Toccata was rediscovered in 2005 and has since provided an ambitiously virtuosic vehicle for today’s guitarists. Rodrigo flecked his works with elements of fantasy, flamenco and bird song while Un tiempo fue Itálica famosa, one of his very greatest works in the genre, is superbly impassioned. The tender Pastoral, originally for piano, is here transcribed for guitar by Jérémy Jouve whose first volume in this series (8.570286) received a three-star review (“The young French guitarist plays brilliantly”) in the Penguin Guide.

Adam Levin, Guitar

This first of four volumes represents award-winning guitarist Adam Levin’s major collaboration with the new century’s ‘Spanish Masters’. Bridges to the past include medieval sources in the Secuencia Sefardita and Baroque in the unconventional variations of Handeliana. These stand alongside pastoral scenes in Viento de Primavera and a celebration of Albéniz from Leonardo Balada. From contemplative moods to spectacular virtuosity, this is a musical voyage both unexpected and unforgettable. Adam Levin has been acclaimed for his ‘enviable technique’ and a ‘high musicianship which shines like a beacon through his performances’. (Classical Guitar magazine)

Lazhar Cherouana, Guitar

Lazhar Cherouana, winner of the 2012 coveted Pittaluga Competition, graduated with a gold medal from the conservatory of Lyon under the world famous Peruvian artist Jesús Castro-Balbi, studying further with Eliot Fisk and Marco Tamayo in Austria. Here he demonstrates the guitar’s versatility and capacity to absorb many styles and idioms. Rameau’s mimicry of birdsong is the spectacular opening to a program which unites Dusan Bogdanovic’s Serbian energy with the Basque lyricism of Manjón’s Aire Vasco, and the delicate colors of Asencio’s Collectici íntim to the 19th-century Italianate virtuosity of Legnani and Regondi.

Rovshan Mamedkuliev, Guitar

Rovshan Mamedkuliev was first prize-winner at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 2012, and now stands as one of the world’s most exciting young instrumentalists. He has constructed a programme with several themes. Iberian music is represented by Falla, Albéniz and Turina, and by two of the titans of guitar playing, Miguel Llobet and Francisco Tárrega. He also includes music by his Azerbaijani compatriot, Fikret Amirov, whose folkloricinfluenced music is another thematic link. The kaleidoscopic Just How Funky Are You by Andrew York and Leo Brouwer’s An Idea explore the guitar’s contemporary vitality.
