This year marks the 150th Anniversary of Edward Elgar, widely considered the leading English composer of his generation and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians.
Most familiar of his works must be the Pomp and Circumstance Marches and Enigma Variations, a work in which the composer portrays his friends. The Cello Concerto of 1919 continues to enjoy great popularity.
Elgar also wrote a number of oratorios. The most important of these is The Dream of Gerontius.
Of his pieces for violin and piano Chanson de nuit and Chanson de matin have considerable charm. Elgar wrote relatively little for the piano, but his Salut d’amour (Love’s Greeting) has proved popular both in its original form and in a multitude of arrangements.
