Maria Kliegel is one of the leading cello-virtuosi of our time. She took up her studies with Janos Starker at Indiana University in the United States. She was the winner of various prestigious international competitions, notably the Rostropovich Competition in 1981. After that, a series of outstanding international concerts and tours began, leading to numerous recording sessions for radio, television and record labels. In 1990, when she recorded Alfred Schnittke’s Cello Concerto No. 1, the Russian composer recognised her interpretation as the standard recording of the work.
A truly versatile artist, Kliegel has made an impressive range of recordings for Naxos which encompasses orchestral, chamber and solo works for the cello. These highly-acclaimed recordings feature composers across the periods – J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Dohnányi, Elgar, Haydn, Lalo, Popper, Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovsky, and more.
