Poro (Porus)
  • George Frideric Handel. Opera in three acts. 1731.
  • Libretto adapted from Pietro Metastasio's Alessandro nell'lndie.
  • First performance at the King's Theatre, London, on 2nd February 1731.

The Indian King Porus, defeated and at first captured by Alexander, although he does not reveal his identity, is jealous of his beloved Cleophis. After a variety of intrigues, prompted largely by Alexander's treacherous general Timagenes, Porus and Cleophis are united, through the generosity of Alexander, who surrenders his own claims to her.

Poro, re dell'lndie (Porus, King of India) won considerable success in London. The opera was revised for revival later in 1731 and again in 1736.
