Aviv Quartet Records Chamber Music by Erwin Schulhoff April 8, 2008
The Aviv Quartet, marking their second appearance on the Naxos label, recently recorded a programme of chamber music by Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942), his String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 and Five Pieces for String Quartet. Schulhoff’s influences were many and varied; from late-Romanticism in his earliest works, to Dadaist art and jazz in his middle-period, to the doctrines of socialist art evidenced in his later pieces. The works, written in the mid-1920’s, are in conventional four-movement style, with modernist rhythmic and melodic elements.
The Aviv Quartet has received numerous competition prizes and citations, and received fine reviews for their first Naxos album of Anton Hoffmeister's Quartets for Strings, Op. 14 (8.555952). The sessions took place from March 11 to 14, at St. Anne's Anglican Church in Toronto, Canada, and were produced and engineered by Norbert Kraft and Bonnie Silver.
