Rarely-heard Songs by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Recorded in Leipzig

April 26, 2008

Dorothea Craxton

Fanny Hensel, born Mendelssohn, was the older sister of Felix Mendelssohn. Herself a talented pianist and significant composer, Hensel’s career was restrained by early 19th century attitudes toward women. She still wrote various ensemble pieces, four cantatas, over 125 piano works and more than 250 lieder. Soprano Dorothea Craxton, accompanied by pianist Babette Dorn, recorded 26 songs, set to poems by Heine, Goethe, Rückert, Lenau, Geibel and Eichendorff. A concert performer since 1986, Dorothea Craxton is a member of the Immortal Bach Ensemble and specialises in performing works by women composers. Sessions took place from April 14 to 18, at Mendelssohnsaal of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany. The producer engineer was Thomas Wieber of Studio Beoton.
