New Recordings From Sousa Specialist Keith Brion

May 7, 2008

Conductor Keith Brion and the Royal Norwegian Navy Band recently concluded recording sessions for Volumes 9 and 10 of Naxos’ John Philip Sousa ‘Music for Wind Band’ series. The first six volumes of the series are in current release.

Following his career in the U.S. Marine Corp. as head of the Marine Band, John Philip Sousa (1854 -1932) formed and lead his own wind band for nearly forty years, composing, among other works, the many marches he is most noted for.

Mr. Brion is a noted Sousa specialist and conductor of Naxos' entire Sousa Wind Band series. Volume 9 will include several marches, among them The Flags of Freedom and The Loyal Legion. Among the marches included on Volume 10 are The Free Lance and the Anchor And Star.

A number of Sousa's works other than the marches were also recorded, including on Volume 9, Nymphalin, for violin solo, performed by Swedish violinist Sarah Ovinge. Volume 10 will include the ballet suite People Who Live In Glass Houses.

Sessions took place from April 14 to 18 at the Tonsberg Domkirke, Norway, and were produced and engineered by Mike Purton and Martin Atkinson respectively.
