More Bach/Stokowski transcriptions from Serebrier and the Bournemouth Symphony
May 14, 2008
Conductor José Serebrier and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra have completed recording a series of Leopold Stokowski's Bach transcriptions for the Naxos label. Among the transcriptions recorded were the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Chaconne in D minor and the Chorale Prelude "Christ lag in Todesbaden".
Serebrier and the BSO have recorded three outstanding prior albums with Stokowski transcriptions: Bach/Handel/Purcell/Stokowski (8.557883), Mussorgsky/Stokowski (8.557645) and Stokowski's "Symphonic Syntheses" of music by Wagner (8.570293). The albums have received glowing reviews and the strongest recommendations: "lusciously beautiful" (Gramophone), "sheer magnificence" (Musicweb), "an unqualified triumph" (ClassicsToday).
The recording sessions, held in Bournemouth, UK, took place from April 17 to 18 and were produced and egineered in Surround Sound by Phil Rowlands.
