Flute Music By Ferdinand Ries Recorded June 5, 2008
From May 16 to 17, flautist Uwe Grodd and pianist Matteo Napoli recorded works for flute and piano by Ferdinand Ries. Born in Bonn, Germany, in 1784, Ries was a student and protégé of Beethoven. Considered a leading pianist of his time, Ries made his performing debut in 1804 with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Naxos has previous released two magnificent piano concertos by Ferdinand Ries conducted by Grodd [8.557638, 8.557844], the first works in a projected edition of the complete works for piano and orchestra, and a programme of Ries' flute quartets.
Sessions took place at Potton Hall, Saxmundham Suffolk, England. Recorded were ‘Sonate Sentimentale’ Op 169, Introduction and Polonaise Op 119, Sonata in G major, Op 87 and Variations on a Portuguese Hymn, Op 152 No 1, in new editions by Uwe Grodd for Artaria Editions.
