World Première Recordings of Music by Franco Alfano

July 10, 2008

Samuel Magill, cello, Elmira Darvarova, violin and Scott Dunn, piano. Recording June 2008.

From June 9 to 10, cellist Sam Magill, pianist Scott Dunn and violinist Elmira Darvarova recorded chamber music by Franco Alfano (1875-1954) for Naxos. Recorded were, for the first time, the Sonata for Cello and Piano and the Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano.

Alfano, best known for his reconstruction of the finale of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, wrote more than a dozen operas, including the formerly much-performed Risurrezione (1904) and the rarely performed but highly-regarded Sakùntala (1921, rev. 1952). In addition to these and other vocal works, he wrote chamber music and two symphonies.

Sam Magill, a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, made his début on Naxos with a critically well-received performance of the Vernon Duke Cello Concerto (8.559286). Scott Dunn recorded for Naxos Vernon Duke's Piano Concerto, which he also orchestrated (8.559286). Elmira Darvarova, here making her Naxos recording début, is the Artistic and Executive Director of the New York Chamber Music Festival.

The recording sessions took place at the M & I Studios in New York, USA, and were produced and engineered by Dina Alexander.
