Pacifica Quartet Named 2009 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America
November 19, 2008
Pacifica Quartet is a model string quartet of the 21st century. Its open-minded approach to repertory embraces both venerable and modern masters, overlooked gems, and brand-new works. It put itself on the map in 2002 when it performed all five of Elliott Carter’s quartets in a single evening. It will finish recording the cycle for Naxos this season, and in the spring gives the premiere of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Saxophone Quintet.

Naxos extends its warmest congratulations to Pacifica Quartet members Simin Ganatra (Violin I), Sibbi Bernhardsson (Violin II), Masumi Per Rostad (Viola) and Brandon Vamos (Cello).

“This first volume is a knockout” – Limelight
“A great release, which I can only hope is matched by the sequel.” – Fanfare
“I'd place the Pacifica set at the head of the class” – American Record Guide
“Music with heart as well as a brain; and a great Naxos bargain” – The Times, 4 STARS
“For sheer instrumental skill, note-to-note precision and unflagging energy, the Pacifica Quartet would be hard to beat in this music, which they addressed heart and soul.” – Musical America
“A wonderful bargain, and the best possible introduction to Carter's music” – The Guardian, 5 STARS
“The Pacificas, who have given all five works in a prodigious single programme, play magnificently.” – Sunday Times
“This performance easily matches the premiere recording by the Arditti Quartet (likely out of print), and if you have an appetite for this music you'll look forward to the concluding disc in the cycle, which will contain Carter's finest work in the medium (the Second Quartet).” - ClassicsToday
The second volume of Elliott Carter’s String Quartets, with Nos 2, 3 & 4 (8.559363) is scheduled for release in February 2009.
