Music for Christmas from Naxos

December 12, 2008

One of Caroline Gill’s Top 10 Christmas Works (Gramophone, December 2008) is John Tavener’s A Christmas Round, of which she writes “Greek Orthodox music may not be synonymous with traditional Christmas repertoire but this is a surprising gem of choral music: the effect of the upper parts buffeting each other is to make you hear the sound of Christmas church bells ringing.”

Although A Christmas Round hasn’t yet been recorded by Naxos, a number of his other beautiful and stirring works in praise of the Virgin Mary have just been released. Titled Ex Maria Virgine, this new Naxos disc (8.572168) features the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, conducted by Timothy Brown, performing Ex Maria Virgine, Birthday Sleep ,  O Do Not Move,  A Nativity, Marienhymne, O Thou Gentle Light  and Angels. Ex Maria Virginie was dedicated to HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall in joyful celebration of their marriage.
