More Spohr from Naxos
January 23, 2009
|Naxos’ recording of Louis Spohr’s Spohr Violin Concertos No 6 in G minor Op 28, No 8 in A minor Op 47 and No11 in G major Op 70 featuring Simone Lamsma (violin) and the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvitskyla conducted by Patrick Gallois (8.570528) has been acclaimed by the Spohr Society: ‘This is one of the finest Spohr recordings ever made and the reason for this is the fact that Simone Lamsma’s violin playing is simply gorgeous. Add to that a fine orchestral contribution under the direction of Patrick Gallois plus an excellent recording and there need be no hesitation in adding this CD to your collection.’ Read review
Simone Lamsma also has a Violin Recital disc on Naxos featuring works by Edward Elgar (8.557984). The young Dutch violinist won the 2004 Benjamin Britten International Violin Competition and second prize in Indianapolis in September 2006.

Nonet and Octet
Naxos inform us that they are to record Spohr’s Nonet in F major Op 31, and the Octet in B major Op 32, with the Danish group, the Diamond Ensemble. They are also looking at including the waltz Erinnerung an Marienbad, Op 89, as a filler. It is too early to speculate on any release date.
The latest information on Volume 13 in Marco Polo’s complete edition of Spohr’s string quartets is that it will be released in March on 8.225315. The Concertino Quartet of Moscow performs Op 29 No 3 in F minor and Op 58 No 3 in G major. The following CD in the cycle will probably be the one which includes No.31 in A major, Op 132, No 36 in G minor Op 57, and the Potpourri on Themes of Mozart Op 24 though recording dates have not yet been settled.
The Naxos disc of Spohr’s first two Double Quartets played by the Forde Consort will now be released next October, just in time for the 150th anniversary of Spohr’s death on October 22nd 1859. The catalogue number is 8.570963. The delayed recording of Nos Three and Four is still scheduled for March 23rd-26th at St Mark’s Church, Peak’s Hill Rise, Church Road, Purley, Surrey.
