Naxos Recordings of Britten’s Les Illuminations Shine

March 5, 2009

The March 2009 issue of Gramophone mentions two Naxos recordings of Benjamin Britten’s youthful song cycle Les Illuminations:

BRITTEN: Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings,
Les Illuminations, Nocturne

Tenor Adrian Thompson is praised for his emotional engagement, ‘and is even willing to let his voice veer slightly out of control to convey the music’s wildness, as he does in “Villes”. I also like the gruff whisper with which he opens “Parade” and the sense of growing desperation he conveys as the song unfolds’, writes Andrew Farach-Colton.

BRITTEN: Les Illuminations, Our Hunting Fathers,
Chansons Françaises

Soprano Felicity Lott’s interpretation ‘at time displays what I can best describe as a Mozartian quality…it’s well worth hearing’, according to Andrew Farach-Colton. This album includes Britten’s rarely-heard Our Hunting Fathers and the Chansons Françaises. She also sings on Naxos’s recordings of Britten’s Folk Song Arrangements (English Song, Vol. 10) 8.557220-21 and his haunting opera The Turn of the Screw (8.660109-10), which is currently available only in the UK and English speaking territories.
