When Joseph Haydn was writing symphonies and string quartets for the Court of Esterhazy, he was also responsible for teaching music, and not always to members of the Esterhazy family. In 1772, a 15-year-old Austrian showed up to take lessons from Haydn, and became one of the elder composer’s favorite students. This was Ignace Pleyel, who, by his mid-twenties, had written several kinds of music, including Italian opera, and established himself at the Strasbourg Cathedral as assistant to the maître de chapelle, Franz Xaver Richter. At Strasbourg the cathedral had a full orchestra, chorus, and plenty of funding, so Pleyel was in his element, and wrote his symphonies concertantes to be performed there, among many other works. Two of these double concertos are on this new CD, along with the Violin Concerto in D.

Pleyel went on to have great success in London (at the same time that his teacher Haydn was writing his London symphonies), then as a music publisher in Paris, where he offered works by Boccherini, Beethoven, Hummel and Clementi, along with his own music.

And to top it all off, he founded Pleyel et Cie, piano builders still producing keyboard instruments today.

These new recordings of Pleyel concertos feature three American string players, all associated with the Aspen Music Festival, who bring a lively presence to the proceedings. The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, directed by Markand Thakar, provides a solid base for these performances recorded in the Orchestra’s home venue, Kraushaar Auditorium at Goucher College.
