Naxos has been awarded a prestigious Classic FM Gramophone Award in the Orchestral Category with its recording of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko.

This award gives recognition to the continued high-quality that this independent label delivers at budget price. Naxos enjoys a successful relationship with the Liverpool Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko and together are releasing a critically acclaimed cycle of the complete symphonies by Shostakovich. The second release in this series is due for release this month and features symphonies Nos. 5 and 9.

Anthony Anderson, Managing Director of Naxos UK, said: ‘Naxos is delighted to receive this award for Vasily Petrenko and the Liverpool Philharmonic’s magnificent reading of the Manfred Symphony. It is further evidence, if any were needed, that the recording and artistic quality of the label is now on a par with the best of today’s record companies.’

Vasily Petrenko, Principal Conductor of RLPO, said: ‘I would like to thank Classic FM and Gramophone for this prestigious Award. It is wonderful recognition of the musical journey the orchestra and I are making together in Liverpool. I would also like to thank the Naxos recording team for their commitment to the Liverpool Philharmonic which began fantastically with our working together on the Manfred Symphony release, and which is set to continue over several years with our recordings of the cycle of Shostakovich’s complete symphonies.’

This is top-quality sound and playing—at bargain price too.
David Nice review of Manfred Symphony in Gramophone November 2008

‘It’s to the credit of Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO […] that there isn’t a single moment in this performance when one wishes for the cuts that were once routinely inflicted on the score. Petrenko makes every bar count…’
Andrew Clements review of Manfred Symphony in The Guardian 17 October 2008

The ‘Liverpool Phil’ is the oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra and the second oldest concert-giving organisation in the UK, founded in 1840. The orchestra gives over 60 concerts from September to June in its home, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, plays a regular concert series at Preston Guild Hall and Blackburn King George’s Hall, and performs frequently in concert halls throughout the UK and abroad. The orchestra’s Chief Conductor is Vasily Petrenko. In 2009, the Liverpool Phil won the Ensemble of the Year award in the 20th Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, the most prestigious accolade for live classical music-making in the UK.

Vasily Petrenko
Born in St Petersburg in 1976, Vasily Petrenko is recognised as one of the exceptional musicians of his generation. Petrenko made his debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2004 and took up the baton as Principal Conductor in September 2006. Just six months into his first season this contract was extended until 2012. In September 2009, the Phil announced that Petrenko was to stay at the helm of the Orchestra until 2015 with the new title of Chief Conductor. Since 1900 only Sir Charles Groves (14 years) and Libor Pesek (10 years) will have exceeded his commitment to the Phil.
