JoAnn Falletta Records Orchestral Music by Josef Suk for Naxos

June 7, 2010

Michael Ludwig, violin

On 3–4 May 3 2010 the Buffalo Philharmonic under the direction of JoAnn Falletta recorded three works of Josef Suk for Naxos. Suk, a student and later the son-in-law of Antonín Dvořák, is a composer whose Romantic works deserve much more frequent performance. The Philharmonic recorded Suk’s inventive Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, played by Michael Ludwig (who has also recorded Dohnányi and Corigliano concertos for Naxos [on 8.559671 and 8.570833, respectively]. The one-movement Fantasy is a tour-de-force for violin and exhibits influences of Dvořák, Strauss and the romantic Russian composers. It is—along with the Dvořák concerto—the most important Czech concerto for violin. Suk, himself a great violinist and the founder of the Bohemia Quartet (with whom he played for 40 years) has created a soaring and virtuosic showpiece for the instrument supported by sophisticated and colorful orchestral accompaniment.

The Philharmonic also recorded Suk’s haunting Fairy Tale based upon a Julius Zeyer fable complete with a wicked queen, a pair of star-crossed lovers, a magical tree, an evil spell, and a happy ending. The music conjures up a mystical world of “once upon a time” in music of nuance, tenderness and drama.

Suk’s tribute to his homeland—the Scherzo Fantastique—completes the CD with a piece brimming with Czech melodies, rhythm and joyful spirit.
