Two Stunning Naxos Recordings using the new Polish National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin

August 2010 New Release

CHOPIN Piano Concerto No 1, Fantasy on Polish Airs, Rondo à la krakowiak
Eldar Nebolsin, piano
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Antoni Wit, conductor

8.572335

Chopin’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 1 is dominated by the brilliant piano part that the teenage performer-composer wrote to showcase his extraordinary virtuosity. Its ravishing Romanza (‘reviving in one’s soul beautiful memories’, as the composer described it) is framed by an opening movement rich in dramatic lyricism and a vivacious Rondo. The Fantasia on Polish Airs, Op. 13 and Krakowiak are similarly vehicles for Romantic reverie and bravura which pay tribute to the music of Chopin’s homeland. Eldar Nebolsin’s recording of Liszt’s piano concertos (8.570517) was ranked ‘among the finest’ by Gramophone.

CHOPIN Piano Concerto No 2, Variations on Là ci darem, Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante
Eldar Nebolsin, piano
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Antoni Wit, conductor

8.572336

Using the new Polish National Chopin Edition, acclaimed pianist Eldar Nebolsin and Poland’s national orchestra conducted by the renowned Polish conductor Antoni Wit here present fresh interpretations of Chopin’s great works for piano and orchestra. The Second Piano Concerto was written before the first and completed in 1830, the year in which the composer set out for Vienna and then Paris. Chopin's Variations on Là ci darem la mano, bear witness to his admiration for Mozart, instilled by his earliest teacher, the Bohemian Wojciech Zywny. The Grande Polonaise in E flat, Op. 22, was written in Vienna, and later augmented with the introductory Andante spianato.

Eldar Nebolsin’s Other Critically Acclaimed Recent Naxos Recordings

LISZT Piano Concertos Nos 1 & 2, Totentanz
Eldar Nebolsin, piano
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Vasily Petrenko, conductor

8.570517

‘Clearly Nebolsin has this music in his fingers…There is sheer pyrotechnic display on offer here that rivals the best on my shelf’
America Record Guide

‘Naxos joins the Liszt with performances that rank among the finest… Nebolsin, winner of the first Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition in 2005, is a virtuoso of power and poetry. While allowing the music to breathe, he plays in long paragraphs without, as it were, having to come up for air.’
Gramophone

‘Eldar Nebolsin is certainly no slouch, and as for the RLPO, well Vasily Petrenko has caused quite a stir in Liverpool… addition the Naxos engineers have captured the Philharmonic Hall in an exceptionally powerful and realistic recording.’
MusicWeb International

DOHNÁNYI Variations on a Nursery Song, Symphonic Minutes, Suite
Eldar Nebolsin, piano
Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra
JoAnn Falletta, conductor

8.572303

‘This is a very good performance, both Nebolsin and Falletta giving very distinguished performances, with the variations very well characterised, and Dohnányi’s poking fun at various composers is well captured…if it’s an introduction to Dohnányi’s music, or if cost is important to you, then this Naxos issue is very good and it will give much pleasure.’
MusicWeb International

‘Eldar Nebolsin offers an interpretation that is perfect in style and colour. It is perfectly seconded by conductor JoAnn Falletta at the head of the Buffalo orchestra.’
