In the studio: Os Músicos do Tejo records Baroque opera “La Spinalba” for Naxos

December 7, 2011

Os Músicos do Tejo

On the 23rd of November, Os Músicos do Tejo completed their recording of “La Spinalba”; a comic opera in three acts by the eminent baroque Portuguese composer Francisco António de Almeida (1702–1755). The opera was first performed in Lisbon in 1739 and was thought to have been lost in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, but was rediscovered later with other works of the composer. A modern edition was published in 1969 by the Gulbenkian Foundation in its Portugaliae Musica collection, and this version was chosen for the recording.

Conducted by Marcos Magalhães, the cast includes Ana Quintans (Spinalba), João Fernandes (Togno), Luís Rodrigues (Arsenio), Joana Seara (Vespina), Cátia Moreso (Dianora), Inês Madeira (Elisa), Fernando Guimarães (Ippolito), and Mário Alves (Leandro). The recording was made at the Salão Nobre of the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) in Lisbon, Portugal. The producer was Pierre Lavoix, assisted by sound engineer Jean Gauthier.

Based in Lisbon and directed by Marcos Magalhães and Marta Araújo, Os Músicos do Tejo is one of Portugal’s leading Early music ensembles. The group has produced many operas and concerts, and specialises in researching and rediscovering Portuguese music from the Baroque era. They have previously released two critically acclaimed records: “As Árias de Luísa Todi” and “As Sementes do Fado”. “La Spinalba” is Os Músicos do Tejo’s first recording for Naxos.
