Vasily Petrenko wins Classic BRIT Male Artist of the Year award for the 2nd time
October 3, 2012
Naxos is proud to congratulate conductor Vasily Petrenko on winning the 2012 Classic BRIT award’s Best Male Artist of the Year, besting megastar nominees Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang. This is his second win in the category in three years, having also won the award in 2010.
Petrenko’s win is in recognition of his celebrated Shostakovich cycle with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for Naxos, and also of two additional recordings on the Avie and EMI Classics labels with the same orchestra. Recordings from his Shostakovich cycle for Naxos previously won the 2011 Gramophone Orchestral Award for Symphony No 10 (Naxos 8.572461), and the 2009 Classic FM/Gramophone Orchestral Recording of the Year for Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony (Naxos 8.570568). Vasily Petrenko was also the recipient of the Classic FM/Gramophone Young Artist of the Year 2007.
The Classical BRIT Awards were established in 2001 to recognise outstanding achievements of classical musicians and the growth of classical music sales in the United Kingdom and are the classical equivalent of pop music’s Grammy or BRIT Awards.
