Robert Craft lifts the veil on Stravinsky

June 22, 2013

Robert Craft

Now in his 90th year, the conductor Robert Craft is one of the diminishing number of people around still able to provide an authoritative connection with the life and times of Igor Stravinsky’s generation, as evidenced in his new book, Stravinsky: Discoveries and Memories (ISBN: 978-1-84379-753-1).

Published by Naxos Books, it tells of the unique and intimate relationship the author enjoyed with the composer—as assistant, companion and confidant—and explores areas of Stravinsky’s life never touched on before.

Presiding over a recent book-signing session for his new publication at the Juilliard Bookstore in New York, Craft provided fascinating responses to questions from the crowd that included Juilliard students, Naxos artists, representatives of Musical America and WNYC radio, and members of The New York City Ballet who had worked with the fabled choreographer George Balanchine.

The years have given Craft a balanced view of the composer he knew so well; his observations of Stravinsky’s relationships with others—from family members to fellow composers to some of the greatest writers, philosophers, politicians and artists of the time—are related with an astonishing freshness, warmth and wit.

The book contains an accompanying CD of Stravinsky’s iconic 1913 ballet score for The Rite of Spring, conducted by Craft and performed by the Philharmonia.
