Naxos welcomes La Scala Memories
December 1, 2013
La Scala Memories is a recently established label devoted to preserving the sparkling legacy of Italy’s most famous opera house. Now celebrating its 235th anniversary, opera lovers can immerse themselves in the very fibre of La Scala’s legendary reputation for magnificent productions showcasing singers of rare distinction.
As much a literary as a musical treat, each of the label’s releases enjoys a distinctive presentation, comprising 2 audio CDs of a historic performance recorded at La Scala, supported by extensive background material, all housed in a high-quality hardback book. This includes previously unpublished backstage photographs from the opera house’s Official Theatre Archives, images of the original programmes, scenery and costume sketches, plus an anecdotal introduction to each opera with the libretto supplied in three languages (Italian, English and German).
A roster of stellar performers in their prime includes singers Maria Callas, Gigliola Frazzoni, Franco Corelli and Giuseppe di Stefano, while the list of renowned conductors features artists such as Arturo Toscanini, Carlo Maria Giulini and Herbert von Karajan. The recordings are of classic productions from the 1950s and 1960s of works by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Donizetti, Spontini and Mozart.
