The Fine Arts Quartet serves up some rare treats

July 2, 2014

Founded in Chicago and based at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1963, the Fine Arts Quartet (FAQ) this year celebrates its 68th anniversary and continues to live up to its reputation as “One of the gold-plated names in chamber music.” (Washington Post)

Naxos is delighted to have been associated with the FAQ since 2006, when the ensemble made its first recording for the label. The disc received the American Record Guide Critic’s Choice award for their performance of Robert Schumann’s String Quartets, Op. 41: “One of the very finest chamber-music recordings of the year.”

A steady series of releases of eclectic chamber works since then has brought the group to its latest project, and their thirteenth Naxos disc. It features rarely heard arrangements for piano and string quintet of two of Mozart’s most magnificent piano concertos, K. 466 and K. 467. These were made by the 19th-century German composer and conductor Ignaz Lachner.”

The recording sessions took place during June 24–26 at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, where the FAQ (violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico, violist Juan Miguel Hernandez and cellist Robert Cohen) were joined by pianist Alon Goldstein and bassist Rachel Calin.

Produced and engineered by multiple GRAMMY®-Award winner Steven Epstein, the disc will be released in 2015.
