Hovhaness Guitar Concerto Recorded by Javier Calderon and Royal Scottish National
January 23, 2007
On 12 and 13 January, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Stuart Robertson recorded the Guitar Concerto Op. 394, Fanfare for the New Atlantis and Symphony No. 63
"Loon Lake” by Alan Hovhaness. The soloist in the Guitar Concerto was Javier Calderon. Narciso Yepes had premiered the Concerto at the Granada Festival but the composer's widow, Hinako Hovhaness, who was present at the recording sessions had never heard the work before. "The Guitar Concerto was Alan's surprise for me -- it is a fantastic piece! It is very unusual and makes me think of Arabic and Indian music. But it is Alan's original and is most exciting. I'm sure this Concerto will capture everybody, especially new young audiences." The sessions took place in Glasgow and were produced by Andrew Walton of K&A Productions.
