Naxos Books New Release: Meet the Instruments of the Orchestra! March 1, 2007
Naxos Books, with Evelyn Glennie, makes a grand entrance into the world of children’s publishing in March ’07 with Meet the Instruments of the Orchestra! – a vibrant, colourful, comprehensive junior book on orchestral instruments with an accompanying interactive CD-ROM.
In 180 pages, all major sections of the orchestra are covered, as well as keyboards, electronic instruments, the conductor and the voice. You learn how each instrument is constructed, how it is played, what its pitch range is, what sort of sound it makes, what role it plays within the orchestral ‘team’, and several miscellaneous tit-bits of information and quotes from the stars (‘The nerves are a problem on trumpet, because when you mess up everyone can hear it.’ – Wynton Marsalis, famous trumpeter). The author, Genevieve Helsby, is supported by a guiding star – Evelyn Glennie – who introduces the book and then pops up throughout with helpful comments.

An integral part of the package, the CD-ROM is where you can listen to each instrument, often in a variety of different contexts (solo, chamber, orchestral etc.). So not only can you see things, you can hear things too – which, after all, is what it’s all about! There are 150 music extracts and hundreds of pictures, with extra sections on star players, the history of the instruments, and other topics.
Come and meet the Burly Bedrock of the Strings (double bass), the Cool Cat (clarinet), the Gentle Giant (tuba), the Colourful Clatterers (percussion), the Boss with the Baton (conductor) and all the other extraordinary ‘characters’ that make up The Orchestra!
