New Recording of a 20th Century Masterpiece for Solo Piano
May 4, 2007
Pianist Ralph van Raat recently recorded Frederic Rzewski’s phenomenal hour-long 36 Variations on ‘The People United Will Never Be Defeated’ (1975), a work based on the song of the same name by the Chilean composer Sergio Ortega. Also recorded during these sessions was ‘Winnsboro Cotton Mills Blues’ – the fourth and final movement of Rzewski’s ‘North American Ballads’ (1978-79). Ralph van Raat has worked extensively with Mr. Rzewski on these works.
The recording sessions took place on April 21 and 22, at the Bachzaal in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and were produced and engineered by Rawyn Productions. Van Raat, whose varied repertoire includes several of the major monumental works of the 20th century, is a Naxos exclusive recording artist. His first recording for Naxos, the complete Piano Music of John Adams (8.559285), has garnered rave reviews.
