New Recording of Dohnányi's Violin Concerti

September 11, 2007

The two violin concerti of Hungarian-born composer Ernő Dohnányi have just been recorded by Naxos. The first concerto, Op. 27, a large and attractive work, bears evidence of the 19th century Romantic composers whose influence on Dohnányi’s compositional style was most acute. The second concerto, Op. 43, completed and premiered in America in the early years following World War II, reveals a broadening of influence and style beyond those of the earlier work.

The featured violinist is Michael Ludwig, the recently named concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording marks Mr. Ludwig’s Naxos début. He is accompanied by The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. The recording sessions took place from August 20 to 21 at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, UK, and were produced and engineered in surround sound by Andrew Walton of K & A Productions.
