New Recordings of Ginastera's String Quartets
September 27, 2007
The three string quartets of Alberto Ginastera were recently recorded by the Enso Quartet in Toronto. Each quartet is of a highly individual and engaging character, as a somewhat more melodic sensibility gave way over time to twelve-tone serialism. Yet, certain elements remain a part of all three quartets, the thrusting, kinetic energy of the fast movements; the glowingly evocative writing of the slow movements; and the uses to which he put the rhythms and sounds of his native Argentina.
The Enso Quartet, known for their wide-ranging repertoire, were joined by soprano Lucy Shelton in String Quartet No. 3. Sessions took place from September 10 to 14 at St. Anne’s Church in Toronto, Canada, and were produced and engineered by Norbert Kraft and Bonnie Silver.
