Sir Michael Tippett's String Quartets
December 11, 2007
Three of the five quartet for strings composed by the eminent Sir Michael Tippett (1905-1998), were recently recorded for future release on the Naxos label by the namesake ensemble Tippett Quartet, here marking their Naxos label recording debut.
The works recorded were the Quartet Nos. 1, 2 and 4. The first quartet was the composer's first published work; the second quartet is one of his finest compositions and ranks high among contemporary works for chamber ensemble. Mr. Tippett’s quartets are marked by a lyric sensibility, modernist harmonic and melodic contours, density and drive.
The Tippett Quartet is a young ensemble (est. 1998), whose repertoire ranges from the classical to the modern era. The Quartet has given premières of works of several contemporary composers.
The recording sessions took place from November 12 to 14 at St. Silas', Chalk farm in London, and were produced and engineered by Michael Ponder.
