Young Austrian Pianist Makes Naxos Début With Scarlatti Sonatas

December 19, 2007

The young Austrian pianist Gerda Struhal made her Naxos label début in November, recording some nineteen of the more than five hundred single-movement solo keyboard sonatas composed by master baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757). Struhal received much of her pianistic training at the music schools in her hometown of Vienna, eventually receiving an honours degree upon completion of her studies. Scarlatti's sonatas are miniature marvels, full of character and rich in harmonic activity and melodic charm. Among the sonatas recorded by Struhal were K163/L 63, E Major, K309/L 454, C Major, K426/L128, g Minor and K547/L S28, G Major.

The recording sessions took place from November 27 to 29 at Potton Hall, UK, and were produced and engineered by Michael Ponder.
