Viola Music by Alessandro Rolla (1757-1841)

March 21, 2008

Violist Jennifer Stumm recently recorded chamber works by the Italian composer, violist and conductor Alessandro Rolla (1757-1841). This project marks the début of both artist and composer on the Naxos label.

Rolla played a crucial role in the development of the viola as an important concert instrument. The composer is well-known for extending the virtuosic technique on both the viola and the violin through his performances and teachings as well as in his compositions, in which he incorporated many feats of advanced technical prowess.

Among the works recorded are the Duetto for viola and violin Op. 16 No. 1 in D, 3 Ezercisios for viola and the Sonata in d for viola and piano. Pianist Connie Shih and violinist Liza Ferschtman are the other two artists on the recording. Jennifer Stumm is a graduate of the Curtis Institute and the Julliard School.

Sessions took place at Potton hall, UK, from March 7 to 9 and were produced and engineered by Michael Ponder.
