Chamber Works by John Ireland Recorded
May 11, 2008
The music of John Ireland (1879-1962) is distinctive among the English Impressionists of his era due to the influence the early 20th century French and Russian masters had on his compositional style. The Maggini Quartet, together with clarinettist Robert Plane, horn player David Pyatt, cellist Alice Neary and pianist Sophia Rahman, recently recorded John Ireland’s Sextet, Fantasy Sonata and Clarinet Trio. Also recorded was the work Holy Boy, in an arrangement for clarinet and piano.
The Maggini Quartet, twice nominated for GRAMMY® awards, regularly receives outstanding notices for its many Naxos recordings of English chamber music. The Quartet has commissioned and given premières of significant contemporary chamber works.
Clarinettist Robert Plane is a member of the Mobius septet and Principal Clarinettist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. His Naxos recording of the Stanford Clarinet Sonata was Gramophone Editor's Choice in November 2007.
The sessions took place on 20, 21 and 25 April at Potton Hall and St. Silas, UK, and were produced and engineered by Michael Ponder.
