BBC 4 to Stream Classic Music Films August 30, 2008
Eight celebrated classical music films will be screened on BBC Four this autumn, as director Christopher Nupen’s pioneering portraits of great musicians run on consecutive Friday evenings from September 26 to November 14.
The series will begin with a film about the tragic British cellist Jacqueline du Pré [Jacqueline du Pre - A Celebration of Her Unique and Enduring Gift, A07CND] whose career was cut short by the onset of Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 28.
“Television was new, enthusiastic and full of hope that it could do something of real importance for the arts in general and for music in particular,” said Nupen, reflecting on the production of the films. “A new kind of camera was invented which made it possible to follow musicians into places where the camera had never been and to show intimate scenes not possible before.
“A new generation of musicians appeared young, full of bounce and different in kind from their predecessors, at least in their relationship with the camera.”
