Oslo Camerata records Grieg and Nordheim for Naxos
September 12, 2009
Stephan Barratt-Due, Artistic Director, Oslo Camerata, writes:
‘Oslo Camerata has recorded the two string quartets by Edvard Grieg (arranged by Alf Årdal) and Rendezvouz by Arne Nordheim (originally a quartet, but revised for string orchestra by the composer).
‘The recording session has been a joy from day one due to a group of wonderful, enthusiastic and highly professional musicians, and an inspiring and extremely professional recording producer and engineer, Sean Lewis.
‘After the release of our all-Grieg CD for Naxos in 2006 [8.557890 GRIEG: Music for String Orchestra], we wanted to pursue the task of recording the two quartets by Grieg. Having tried out several versions of arrangements, we have landed on arrangements that do not differ drastically from the original score. The depth given by adding a double bass, and the variety in using solos and tutti, gives in our opinion, the pieces a new dimension combining both the intimacy of Grieg and lifting the richness of the romantic expression in the pieces.
‘Grieg is an internationally well known composer, and we think adding Rendezvous by Arne Nordheim (by far the most important Norwegian composer of our time) as a bonus track, gives the recording a wonderful perspective on the Norwegian musical life and history.’
Producer Sean Lewis praised the ‘young, energetic band’ for its ‘very vibrant and committed playing’, and noted that Nordheim’s Rendezvous is a classic of Norwegian contemporary string music repertoire.
The Grieg/Nordheim disc will be released on Naxos 8.572441.
