Two Eggert Symphonies Recorded for Naxos

December 16, 2009

Joachim Nicolas Eggert’s Symphony in C major and Symphony in E flat major have been recorded by Gävle Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gerard Korsten between 23–27 December 2009 in Gävle Symphony Hall, Gavle, Sweden and will be released on Naxos 8.572457.

‘Symphonies No 1 in C major and No 4 in E-flat major by Swedish Joachim Nikolas Eggert were among the first symphonies written where trombones are used. Both were stylishly played by the Gävle Symphony Orchestra and superbly conducted by Gerhard Korsten. These were enjoyable sessions, with good discipline and concentration throughout. We’re looking forward to recording Eggert’s Symphonies Nos 2 and 3.’
Sean Lewis (producer)

‘Our interest in Eggert was raised since he is a quite unknown Swedish composer whose music is seldom played and has never been recorded. In his symphonies three trombones are used as a group for the first time (before Beethoven did so). A new edition (Escobar) has made it possible to play and record this music. Both the C-major and E-flat major Symphonies were played earlier this season to give the orchestra the very best opportunities to make a first class recording. The E-flat major Symphony with Maestro Korsten the week before the recording and the C-major Symphony in September. These are two of Eggert’s four symphonies. We look forward to the release.’
Einar Ander, Gävle Symphony Orchestra

The Gävle Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest in Sweden, dating back to 1912. Its recording with pianist Christopher Hinterhuber of Hummel’s Oberons Zauberhorn, Variations on Das Fest der Handwerker and Le retour de Londres (8.557845) was hailed as ‘unalloyed delight from first to last’ by Fanfare and gained Gramophone Editor’s Choice.
