‘Alice Sommer Herz: Everything is a Present’ DVD Wins New York Film and Television Festival Award

June 24, 2010

On 4 May 2010 Christopher Nupen’s latest film with Alice Sommer Herz was awarded the World Documentary Bronze Medal at the New York Film and Television Festival.

Gigi Sommer, the heroine of the film, is one of the most remarkable people on the face of the earth. Her extraordinary life, her appalling experiences, her complete lack of hatred, her quiet grace, her dignity and her charm win the admiration and affection of all who discover her.

ALICE SOMMER HERZ – Everything is a Present
A film by Christopher Nupen
A11CND

She is now 106 ½ years old—the second oldest person in London—and still practices the piano to 2 ½ hours every day.

She is a concentration camp survivor who attributes her longevity to her optimism and to music. She played more than a hundred concerts in the Terezín camp and knows that she saved both her own life and the lives of many others in the process. She describes the life of a musician as a privilege because the musician is in constant contact with “The most beautiful thing coming out of mankind”. She laments that there are millions of people in the world who do not know how the magic of music could enrich their lives.

The film and the DVD were made to celebrate her 106th birthday, her extraordinary life and her even more extraordinary character. That the New York Film and Television Festival should award it this prize—in competition with entries from 32 countries—is a happy confirmation of the respect, affection and admiration which Gigi Sommer generates wherever she is known.

The film made a considerable impact when shown on BBC television on Holocaust Memorial Day in January 2010 and at he Avant Première screenings in Cannes in the same month. The Cannes screening produced a review in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung which ended with the words, ‘This film is a plea for mankind and the power of music—it is a Must for every self-respecting television network’.
