Bavarian & Munich Radio Symphony Orchestras Win 2010 ECHO Klassik Awards

September 5, 2010

The German Phono Academy has honoured two BR Klassik CDs featuring Bavarian Broadcasting’s orchestras in this year’s Echo Klassik Awards: Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in the ‘Ensemble/Orchestra of the Year’ category and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester for the ‘Best Operatic Recording’.

The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of its Chief Conductor, Mariss Jansons, was singled out for its recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 (BR Klassik 403571900100), and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under Ulf Schirmer received the trophy for its CD of Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Des Simplicius Simplicissimus Jugend (The Youth of Simplicius Simplicissimus , BR Klassik 403571900301)).

BRUCKNER Symphony No 7
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Mariss Jansons, conductor

403571900100

‘As always with Jansons’s Bruckner, the performance is broadly based yet purposeful. As to the Bavarian playing, it is admirably resolute…It is a concert one would certainly have been pleased to hear.’
Gramophone

‘marvellously played from start to finish. Jansons’ interpretation is clean and fresh, taking us on a rollercoaster adventure and revealing all kinds of small details whilst maintaining momentum.’

HARTMANN Simplicius Simplicissimus
Camilla Nylund, soprano • Will Hartmann, tenor
Christian Gerhaher, bass • Michael Volle, bass
Die Singphoniker • Munich Radio Orchestra
Ulf Schirmer, conductor

403571900301

‘This edition sounds taut and pungent under Ulf Schirmer’s baton. Camilla Nylund sings gleamingly as the idealist Simplicius, and there are incisive yet pliable performances from the three excellent male soloists, Christian Gerhaher, Will Hartmann and Michael Volle. A half-hour ‘bonus’ track features discussion (in German) about the work.’
4 STARS BBC Music magazine

‘The performance reveals it to be a work, that despite its quirkiness, has a raw power musically and dramatically. Ulf Schirmer offers strong leadership of Münchner Rundfundorchester and Die Singphoniker, turning in a committed and virtuosic performance that makes a good case for the opera. As the child Simplicius, soprano Camilla Nylund fully inhabits the role, and sings with strength and warmth. Will Hartmann is a vigorously forceful Hermit…Baritone Christian Gerhaher sings powerfully as the Mercenary. The sound of the live recording is clear and present.’

The Awards Ceremony will take place on October 17, 2010 in the Essen Philharmonie during a TV gala. The event will be hosted by prominent German television personality Thomas Gottschalk.
