NAXOS' ROBERT CRAFT COLLECTION IN THE NEWS

THE NEW YORK TIMES, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS FEATURE
ALL-NEW RECORDINGS OF SCHOENBERG AND WEBERN

STRAVINSKY'S FIREBIRD AND PETRUSHKA TO BE RELEASED MARCH 22nd

Recent articles in The New York Timesand the San Jose Mercury News have praised two newly-recorded CDs of music by Schoenberg (8.557520) and Webern (8.557530)that Naxos released in January as part of its Robert Craft Collection.

David Schiff, writing in The New York Times on Sunday, commended Craft and his performers for assured interpretations that make the music shine with the "glowing patina of classics," providing “rich overviews of the evolving styles of Webern and Schoenberg."

In a review last weekend of the Schoenberg CD featuring his Concerto for String Quartet - a piece based on a Handel Concerto Grosso - Richard Scheinin noted that “for all the demanding density and complexity of his music, Schoenberg always gave his listeners a foothold. The performances on this disc bring him across directly and vividly."

On January 18th, Naxos of America released the first four recordings in its new Robert Craft Collection: re-issues of Igor Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Les Noces and Arnold Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder as well as the recordings of music by Schoenberg and Webern discussed by Schiff and Scheinin.

The Robert Craft Collection, when complete, will be a comprehensive survey of works by Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Webern, conducted and compiled by one of the most astute authorities on twentieth century music.  The next release in the Robert Craft Collection is a re-issue of Stravinsky's Firebird (complete Urtext edition) and Petrushka with the Philharmonia Orchestra, that arrives on March 22nd, 2005.

SCHOENBERG: Concerto for String Quartet; The Book of the Hanging Gardens, Opus 15; Suite for Piano, Opus 25; Song of the Wood Dove from Gurre-Lieder (arranged by Schoenberg in 1923 for 18 musicians); A Conversation with Arnold Schoenberg.
