AMERICAN COMPOSER GEORGE ROCHBERG DIES AT 86

Symphony No. 5, Violin Concerto, Black Sounds on Naxos American Classics;

Symphony No. 2 to be Released in Fall 2005

George Rochberg, 86, whose music stands as some of the finest on Naxos’s American Classics series, died Sunday, May 29th of complications following surgery on May 2nd; according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer, he died peacefully in Bryn Mawr Hospital in the western suburbs of Philadelphia.

A staunch critic of the academic modernism that dominated American concert music after World War II, Rochberg rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s with works that openly embraced the classical music tradition.  His oeuvre includes a Violin Concerto (1975) that was championed by Isaac Stern, six symphonies that enjoyed premieres by such prestigious ensembles as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra, seven string quartets, and the opera The Confidence Man.

In July 2003, Naxos released Rochberg’s Symphony No. 5 (8559115) performed by Christopher Lyndon-Gee and the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, and followed this CD with the world premiere recording of the complete restored version of the Violin Concerto (8559129) in April 2004.  A disc of various works (including Black Sounds) by Rochberg (8559120) featuring the Boston Modern Orchestra Project is also on Naxos.  A recording of Symphony No. 2 is planned for release in September and Symphony No. 1 is slated for early 2006.  All recordings are part of the American Classics series.
